Gulfport police chief fed up with subculture of violence: Change, leave Gulfport or go to prison

GULFPORT -- Weekend killings moved the Gulfport police chief to frustration Monday, leading to sharp words for the city's "criminal subculture" and those who see criminal activity and don't report it.
To criminals, Chief Leonard Papania said, "We will be relentless in our pursuit to identify you and arrest you. So you can either change, you can leave or you can go to prison."

To others, he said, "Do not wait until something tragic happens. When you are aware of smaller crimes indicative of the criminal subculture, you must act. Do not wait for violence."

"There are those turning a blind eye and even defending the criminal lifestyles that are leading up to violent crime."

Papania said he is "sick and tired of this 'no snitch' and 'don't work with police'" attitude.
